2005-2006 School Year
24 July - 4 August, 06 - We offered 2 weeks of Summer day camp this year. The camp program included instruction in Russian language and math, educational activities in history and geography, Russian national arts and crafts, skits and stories, supervised games, pool, field trips and more.
Summer school - classes for 3rd-4th graders in Russian and Math continued through summer on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
28-30 July, 06 - School sponsored field trip to CULTURAL HERITAGE DAY at Fort Ross. Fort Ross was a Russian outpost in Northern California, established in 1812. Now it is state historic park and museum. Every year it hosts a cultural heritage day when volunteeres and activists enact life at the post in those days, perform, cook food and entertain guests.
25 June, 06 - Russian Theater Company at UCI presented its new production "PIPPI LONG STOCKING" by famous Swedish children's writer Astrid Lindgren. It was our first production when actors not only performed, but also sang and danced. The show was a phenomenal success! Thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make it happen. 25 June, 06 - Graduation Ceremony and Children's Show was held at the end of school year. Our students demonstrated their achievements: kindergarteners and first graders recited poems about letters, 3rd graders enacted tales by I. Krylov and poem by E.Moshkovskaya, and middle-schoolers read their own essays. Our choir performed 2 songs. The audience even got to enjoy a poem in Ukranian language. All students got awards for their outstanding achievements and attendance. Pictures will be posted here soon.
20 May, 06 - Math Kangaroo - 06 Award Ceremony was held at 11:05 at the Humanities Interim Classroom Facilities (HICF, Building 611) at UC Irvine. We are very proud to have NATIONAL WINNERS this year! A full list of winners and participants can be found at http://www.mathkangaroo.org. Our students Michail Boulgakov, Valerie Lowe and Yelena Mandelshtam were in the top 10 winners. Alexander Boulgakov won the 1st prize in his grade! Congratulations to all who participated!
22 Apr, 06 - Annual Open House and Fair at UCI. Our club hosted a booth and an exhibition. Visitors of our booth expressed sincere interest (both professional and financial) in our students' artwork. It was not for sale at that time, but we promise we will think about it.
8 Apr, 06 - Spring quarter began. We introduced new classes: Ukranian Language for beginners and Physics for middle-schoolers.
16 Mar, 06 - MATH KANGAROO 2006 International Competition Math Kangaroo is the largest international math competition for grades 2-12. It is very popular in Europe and Australia and it is making its way in the USA as well. We helped to bring this competition to California and hosted it for the first time! Math Kangaroo website http://www.mathkangaroo.org gives you the idea of this competition's mission, history, participation rules and sample tests. 11 Mar, 06 - International Women's Day Talent Show Our talent show impressed moms, dads and numerous relatives and friends. Teens read their own compositions, recited classic love poems and spoke about love to their moms. Upper elementary students recited poems. Little ones impressed everybody with great skits and rhymes about moms. Student ensembles of our 2 music classes sang admirably. Kids prepared nice handmade cards for teachers and moms. Traditional tea party and reception after the show made all guests feel at home. Pictures are here.
26 Feb, 06 - Traditional Russian MASLENITSA Celebration We had a great day celebrating end of winter at ONeill Regional Park http://www.ocparks.com/oneillpark . Everybody enjoyed pancakes - lots and lots of them. Thanks to all who donated supretasty pancakes! We proudly announce that we completed entire program: storytime, parade of winter scarecrows, riddle competition, singing show (chastushki), traditional Russian games. 4 Feb, 06 - Parents conference We elected new Board, discussed results of fall semester, did planning for coming spring events, discussed discipline at school. Press release has been sent to all parents.
14 Jan, 06 - Winter quarter began
8 Jan, 06 -New Year Performance and Celebration We had a real Russian traditional NEW YEAR PERFORMANCE and CELEBRATION! Children met Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, as well as other Russian folk heros: Koschej Bessmertnij, Kikimora, Vodyanoj and many more. Russian Theater Company at UCI performed with great inspiration and professionalism. The play was followed by childrens show. All children received presents from Ded Moroz, little performers got awards and prizes. Everybody had an opportunity to take a picture near the New Year tree with real Ded Moroz and Snegurochka! 27 Nov, 05 - Traditional Russian Harvest celebration As usual, we get together at O'Neill Regional Park where we read fall stories, gather real harvest (cleverly planted by parents early in the morning), make jam, bake potatoes, play games and enjoy fall weather.
26 Nov, 05 - Gregory Popovich Comedy and Pet Theater A famous russian circus artist Gregory Popovich came to Irvine. His Comedy and Pet Theater stars domesticated animals that Popovich rescued from shelters. His juggling skills, comedy tricks and intelligent housecats and pound puppies has resulted in great acclaim for his show, voted "Best Family Attraction" in Las Vegas. There was a lot of Russian music during the show. Our choir members just learned a song about Black cat. When they heard it during the show, they sang it with great inspiration! Audience was impressed. We took a picture with the Gregory. He sincerely thanked us for such a creative and active support during the show. He was immensely impressed by perfect Russian that our students used when talking to him. See pictures here.
20 Nov, 05 - International Russian Language Competition "Russkii Medvezhonok" (Russian Bear) We became the first site in Western hemisphere to offer "Russkii Medvezhonok" Russian language competition. This event is open to any student in grades 2-11 thoughout the world and has more than 1 mln participants every year. Our first competition was popular in local Russian community. Even brave adults decided to compete informally using 11th grade test. All winners and participants of competition "Russkii Medvezhonok" got awards and prizes.Pictures are here. 17-18 Sep, 05 - Weekend Kickoff Camp Kids had a blast for whole 2 days! It is wonderful to see old friends and to meet new ones. What a great beginning of a new school year! Our new students got a warm welcome in an informal campground setting. See pictures here.
